It is the people of MSU that make MSU great and keep it running smoothly. Thankful Thursdays are a weekly opportunity to recognize an employee or employee group for what they contribute to MSU.
In spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday, we asked MSU faculty, staff and students what they were truly thankful for. Here is what they had to say:

Today we are celebrating our bosses and supervisors! October 16th is internationally recognized as Boss’ Day. Officially proclaimed as a holiday in 1962, the purpose of Boss’ Day is to have employees recognize all of the hard work their bosses do.

Year round, facilities workers keep MSU’s neighborhoods intact. Providing custodial, maintenance and construction services for the residential halls, the staff and student employees gets little notice for their day-to-day efforts. Formerly known as IM Sports, today we are thanking Recreational Sports and Fitness Services for providing their programs and services throughout the summer!
RecSports has three indoor facilities, one multi-purpose arena, 27 acres of outdoor space and shared campus facilities, all of which are available to anyone with a valid MSU Issued ID card. By purchasing a membership or paying a $3 fee per visit, students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use both IM Sports West and East Fitness Centers. Alumni can visit for $7 per day or purchase a membership as well.
Not only are fitness rooms available for use, but racquetball, tennis, and volleyball courts are also open for use. All fitness centers have rentals for equipment and courts available. Group exercise classes for kickboxing, yoga, cycling, Zumba, and more are available at the same prices as well. IM Sports West, IM Sports Circle, and Jenison Pool have pool hours and a swim school is available in the summer.Continue Reading… Thank You Rec Sports!
Today we’d like to thank the MSU Student Organic Farm,which brings great produce to our community and dining halls! The MSU Student Organic Farm is a 10-acre, certified organic year-round teaching and production farm. The farm project was initiated by a group of students, and it offers them a chance to apply what they learn in classes and to discover things outside of a classroom. The farm is managed by a steering team, with input from the farm staff, instructors, students and other faculty.
Each Thursday from April to October, the Student Organic Farm hosts a farm stand from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The stand is directly in front of the MSU Auditorium. They offer items such as certified organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, transplants and fresh cut flowers. They also put together an e-newsletter that tells you what they’ll be bringing to the stand each week. With more than 38,000 enrolled students roaming one of the 10 largest university campuses in the country, it’s difficult to imagine a time when MSU consisted of only two buildings and a barn. Yet in 1857, that’s what MSU was: the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, later to be named Michigan Agricultural College (M.A.C.), with only 63 enrolled students and five faculty members. The small agricultural college was a forerunner for American universities, and with the signing of the Morrill Act in 1862, it became the first public land-grant college in the United States.
Originally a state land-grant institution, the college received an appropriation of 14,000 acres of state-owned land to build upon. After the Morrill Act was signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Congressman Justin Morrill of Vermont, each state in the Union was given 30,000 acres of public land for every member of its congressional delegation. Happy Administrative Professionals Day! With thousands of support staff doing administrative functions, there are a lot of people to thank at Michigan State University today. Without these great people, the business operations of the University wouldn’t work with the efficiency they do now.
