Read Any Good Books Lately?
If you’re looking for a great read for this weekend, it’s not too late to check out this year’s One Book, One Community selection, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer.
The annual One Book, One Community program, co-sponsored by the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University, encourages residents of East Lansing and the MSU community to read the same book and then discuss it in a variety of settings.
If you like the book, you also might want to take advantage of a terrific opportunity to spend an evening with the author!: Continue Reading… Read Any Good Books Lately?

Thank You Residential Dining Staff!
Today we’re thanking the staff members that serve about 30,000 meals a day in our 14 dining halls.
The university’s cafeterias have changed in looks, food choices and costs over the years, but they’re still cooking and serving food with a smile! We appreciate the outstanding dining experiences we have, and the reasonably-priced meal plans that allow us to dine on campus! From sushi at Brody to made-to-order pasta at Hubbard, we know we’re going to get a good meal, even if we’re customer number 3,000.Continue Reading… Thank You Residential Dining Staff!
Buy Local, Buy at a Farmers Market!
Do you wish you knew which of the fruits and vegetables you’re buying are from Michigan? A great place to find local, in-season produce, meats, flowers and more is at a farmers market! Farmers markets provide you an opportunity to increase the variety of fruits and vegetables you eat and to try some recipes you can only make when certain ingredients are available. When you buy in-season produce from a farmers market, you’re getting the highest nutrient content, and it’s typically cheaper than grocery store organic produce too. Can MSU Help Me Find Child Care?
It’s Mailroom Monday! This week’s question is: Can MSU help me find child care?
Yes! MSU can help you find child care plus a whole lot more! MSU has a relationship with a group named Care.com that MSU faculty and staff can use to find childcare, eldercare, pet sitters, housesitters, housekeepers and more.
The service is free to MSU employees to use once you register, and registration gives you access to a searchable database of a wide range of care providers all over the United States! In addition, you can also post a job description of the type of help you are looking for and have the candidates come to you.
You can search by zip code area and/or job type and view profiles of care givers that often include a background check. The service to help you locate providers that are a good match for your needs is free; however you will still be responsible for paying individuals you hire for their services.Continue Reading… Can MSU Help Me Find Child Care?
MSU HR is Certifiably Green!
It’s Fun Friday at Michigan State University! Know what we think is fun? Getting greener!
Â
MSU Human Resources recently achieved Green Certification from the folks at the MSU Office of Sustainability.
The Green Certification program recognizes units working hard to reduce their environmental footprint by reducing waste, increasing recycling, following green procurement practices and conserving energy and water.
To achieve Green Certification, Human Resources recruited a group of environmental stewards that works continuously with staff throughout our unit to encourage greener behaviors – and we’re proud of all staff in HR who have embraced these behaviors. Some of the steps we’ve taken at HR to get greener include:
- Increasing our recycling efforts through MSU Recycling and setting up our own Styrofoam recycling process.
- Changing our default printer and copier settings to default to printing double-sided in black and white.
- Encouraging staff throughout the office to keep thermostats at 70 degrees in the winter and 76 degrees in the summer.
- Turning lights out in unoccupied offices.
- Educating all staff about what can be recycled and making it easy to recycle by placing signage and bins in high traffic areas on every floor. Continue Reading… MSU HR is Certifiably Green!
Thank You Recycling Center and Surplus Store Staff!
Today we’re thanking the staff members that make sure MSU is a great, green place to work for decades to come. They work together in their new facility to reduce waste, reuse unwanted items and recycle materials from 553 campus buildings. Their recycling facility has tripled the amount of materials MSU can recycle, and the public recycling drop-off center allows employees to bring in their recyclables from home. The MSU Surplus Store allows departments to unload unwanted items that they can try to sell, donate or recycle instead of going straight to landfill.
The Be Spartan Green initiative is a team effort, but we couldn’t have made the progress we have without these staff members! The MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center will help achieve MSU’s goals to reduce energy use by 15%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15%, and reduce landfill waste by 30% by 2015. Campus landfill waste was already reduced 1,037 tons from the 2007-08 year to the 2008-09 year. In 2010, MSU Recycling & Surplus collected 20 million pounds of unwanted material and diverted 69% out of the landfill.Continue Reading… Thank You Recycling Center and Surplus Store Staff!
