Cholesterol is a fatty substance, also called a lipid, that’s produced by the liver. It’s found in foods high in saturated fat, like fatty meats, egg yolks, shellfish, and whole-milk dairy products. Moderate cholesterol levels in your blood are a vital part of the structure and functioning of our cells, but high levels of LDL cholesterol — low-density lipoproteins — can lead to a slow plaque buildup in the arteries over time, and serious progressive health problems.

There are three main components your doctor evaluates when you have a blood test to check your cholesterol levels. They are LDL (bad) cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, and triglycerides.Continue Reading… Monitoring and Managing Cholesterol

Job of the Week 4/12/13

This week we’re highlighting a Secretary III position with MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (Posting 7603). Some of the duties of the position include providing secretarial support in the administrative and functional aspects of a departmental office by maintaining faculty calendars and making travel arrangements; acting as a resource for faculty and staff regarding policy and process-related questions; coordinating department sponsored courses, clerkships and conferences; assisting with preparing financial documents and payroll submission in the EBS system; assisting with maintaining departmental accounting ledgers; transcribing patient and academic dictation and processing physician reports within the electronic medical records system; providing secretarial support to faculty by maintaining calendars, and receiving and directing correspondence; scheduling and arranging on- and off-campus meetings, educational programs and conferences; coordinating faculty travel plans for both domestic and international travel; updating departmental website; coordinating medical student courses, clerkships, rotations and shadowing experiences within the department. This week we’re highlighting an Office Assistant III position with MSU College of Human Medicine (Posting 7576). Some of the duties of the position include providing primary support to faculty and the program administrators for the operational and administrative functions of the Psychiatry department’s medical education office programs; coordinating all aspects of producing and delivering educational events which include weekly seminars, grand rounds, clerkship scheduling and testing events; maintaining program’s web pages; assisting in all areas related to resident recruitment, academic advising, rotation scheduling, credentialing, evaluation, graduation, accreditation and records management; assisting in all areas related to the medical student clerkship program including orientations, grades, reporting, data entry and records management.

Job of the Week 3/29/13

This week we’re highlighting a Community Operations Coordinator II/RHS position (Posting 7536). Some of the duties of the position include providing administrative leadership for the following specialized areas: Conferences, Neighborhood and Engagement Center Initiatives, Cash Handling, Hiring and Training. Senior Community Operations Coordinators are responsible for operational administrative functions for the neighborhood engagement center, university partners and/or designated communities. Community Operations Coordinators II/RHS also have overall administrative leadership and support for a residence hall or apartment complex; recruits, hires. This position trains, supervises and evaluates student team members who work at the Guest Service Centers; provides residence hall tours, works in the Business Office, works with the Safety and Service Center Administrator, and provides service for the Summer operations; reports to the community director. Residence Education and Housing Services team members are committed to the following principles: 1) student learning, engagement and development through the neighborhood model, 2) intercultural learning and inclusion, 3) restorative justice principles and 4) sustainable practices. They understand and appreciate the fact that they are the primary custodians of the Residence Education and Housing Services brand and work in a culture of accountability to ensure that the brand is strengthened through daily actions.
