Job of the week – Union Manager

This week’s job of the week is an Union Manager (#585654) for MSU Union. This position is seeking an individual to direct, implement and evaluate operational activities of services and partnerships at the Union.

The responsibilities for this role include interviewing, hiring, supervising and evaluating support staff. Other responsibilities for this role include working with Residential Hospitality Services (RHS), developing operational budgets, preparing monthly reconciliation of fund ledgers and provide active support with REHS Outreach and MSU Tour programs.

The ideal candidate would possess knowledge by completing a four-year degree program in business or hospitality; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in management, retailing, accounting, marketing, maintenance, public relations and contract administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

It’s that time of the year, and the staff at the Office of Admissions are buried in reviewing the record number of over 35,000 applications they’ve received this year and sending out final decisions for potential additions to MSU’s student body. Michigan State offers rolling admission, and with a university as large as ours, the Office is always busy, but especially so when it comes time to decide the fall freshman class. Admissions is also constantly taking applications from transfer, guest, and graduate students, as well as helping navigate the process for future applicants and prospective international students. All of the time put in is a powerful effort to enhance the student experience, a Bolder By Design initiative that places importance on the ways students learn and grow at Michigan State as well as the value of achieving an MSU degree.

MSU Culinary Services Ranks No. 24 in the Nation

Niche.com recently released its 2015 rankings for Best Campus Food, placing the Michigan State University Culinary Services dining program at No. 24 with an A+ score among traditional four-year colleges and universities in the United States. According to the rankings, Culinary Services—a department of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services—is the top university dining services in Michigan.Eat at State graphic

The 2015 Eat at State summer hours of operation run through August 28 for the following locations:

Brody Square will be open Monday – Friday between 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.

The Vista at Shaw will be open Monday – Friday between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m., 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Riverwalk Market at Owen Hall will be open Monday – Friday between 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. through August 20.

Sparty’s locations:

  • Administration Building (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
  • Brody (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday – Sunday Noon – 10 p.m.)
  • Communication Arts & Sciences, Engineering & Erickson: (Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.)
  • MSU Union (Monday – Friday 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday Noon – 10 p.m.)

The MSU Union Deli will be open Monday – Friday between 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The Crossroads Food Court at the International Center:

  • UP Pizzeria at Crossroads (Monday – Friday 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • Panda Express (Monday – Friday 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • Sparty’s (Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • Subway (Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m)
  • Woody’s (Monday – Friday 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Eat at State ON-THE-GO is MSU’s own Food Truck service with two trucks in operation. Check out the Food Truck website for their Weekly Specials!

And Don’t forget the MSU Bakers! Deliveries are available Monday through Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

MSU Benefits Plus – Discounts and Programs

A reminder to all MSU benefits-eligible faculty and staff, you have the opportunity to enroll in several voluntary employee-paid benefits programs through MSU Benefits Plus. The optional programs include Vision Insurance, Group Legal Services, Critical Illness Insurance, Long-Term Care Insurance, Auto and Home Insurance, Pet Insurance and discount shopping.

Vision, legal and critical illness insurance have an annual open enrollment period during the fall of each year. That means you can only enroll at that time each year and once you enroll, you cannot change or cancel that enrollment until the next annual open enrollment period (unless you have a qualifying life event). The Inspirational Woman of the Year Award Recognition Reception will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the University Club and is free to attend.

Spring 5k Races on MSU’s Campus!

One 5k you can check out is the Shamrock 5k, benefiting the Tower Guard.

There’s no better way to kick that cabin fever than lacing up those running shoes and participating in a 5k for a great cause. There are plenty of 5k races taking place right here on MSU’s campus in East Lansing this spring.

Measure Value with These Courses!

How do you know the functions and services you offer are providing what your “customer” needs? And, if so, do you have the data to back that up? MSU leadership is promoting and supporting data-driven decision making. How do you know what to measure and who to ask? Attending two upcoming Professional Development Services (PDS) courses offered will help you decide what you should measure and then create a plan to do it.

Assessments and surveys can help you better present your programs and services’ value to MSU leadership!

On Wednesday, March 25, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. you can attend Proving Value: Introduction to Assessments, for free. How do you know the programs you offer are adding value? Assessments provide a method for determining what to measure, how to measure and who to ask. This session will cover a wide range of assessment topics such as, developing an effective assessment plan, collecting data, and interpreting and reporting your results.

The second class, Proving Value: Designing Effective Surveys,  will be held on Monday, April 20, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and is also free. This course will discuss the best ways to get feedback from your customers to ensure your programs and services are adding value. This interactive session will help you in developing surveys that are useful, informative, and contribute to data-informed decision making. You will also discuss how to make your surveys user-friendly and increase survey response rates. The presenter for each of these courses is Paul Goldblatt of the MSU Residential and Hospitality Services Assessment Office.

With temperatures crawling below zero, it can be easy to feel stir crazy during winter’s most brutal months. Luckily, there are many activities that you can do in order to defeat the dreaded symptoms of cabin fever.

The Abrams Planetarium plays shows featuring the Digistar 5 Project. The planetarium is open to the public on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as Sunday afternoons. All tickets are $4 or less, however, electronic payment is not accepted. Stop by to marvel at One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure or Ice Worlds.

Enjoy live entertainment at the Wharton Center.

The Wharton Center is a beautiful venue that hosts a wealth of interesting acts. Performances are eclectic and include plays, dance and concerts. Watch the Phantom of the Opera, The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet or 2 Cellos, among other talent.
