Every year there is a staff member chosen as the winner of the Clerical-Technical Recognition Award. This winner exemplifies a respect and concern for all members of the MSU community, diligence in daily work, significant contributions to the community or public service and innovative thinking. The 2013 winner of this respected honor is Barbara Sweeney, an Office Assistant III for the Animal Science Department at MSU.
Barbara Sweeney is the winner of the annual Clerical-Technical Recognition Award. The award honors a clerical-technical support staff member for a strong work ethic and innovative thinking.
Barbara (also known as Barb) has worked at the University for 40 years. After graduating from MSU in 1974 with a degree in Elementary Education, she began her career as a secretary in the MSU Department of Animal Science, Horse Extension Office. Since then Barbara has advanced several times in her career at MSU. She currently processes payroll for over 100 students and on-call/temporary employees. She also serves as the department lead for student hiring.

Parking at a meter without any loose change can be a nightmare, but new parking meters across campus are changing the way MSU faculty, staff and students are parking.
New parking meters on campus mean more ways to pay for MSU faculty, staff and students.
During the summer MSU police conducted a three-month trial run of solar powered parking meters that accept credit and debit cards in addition to cash and coins. Since then the meters have been placed in various areas around campus, such as the Dairy Store, the Union and Owen Hall.

This week we are highlighting a Communications Manager I position with Communications and Brand Strategy (Posting #8610). The Communications Manager will assist with the development and implementation of multiple ongoing PR campaigns to promote the work of key MSU researchers; will research and identify key media and write releases and content for the researcher’s websites; will help track and evaluate plan metrics in order to assess the effectiveness of the plans and develop future efforts; will also research and help identify different vehicles and creative ways to promote the researchers. This week we are highlighting an Executive Staff Assistant position with the Libraries (Posting #8579). This position assists the Director of Libraries with day-to-day operations and administrative tasks; works in tandem with the business officer to manage all Main Office operations; serves as backup fiscal officer for the Libraries to analyze budgets, make recommendations, and monitor and approve financial expenditures as necessary; works in tandem with the fiscal officer to ensure that the Libraries are meeting fiscal objectives; prepares year-end reports, processes gifts, prepares gift acknowledgement letters and year-end endowment letters to donors, including the endowment activity report; deposits gifts and processes gifts of materials through the MSU Foundation; maintains donor filing system; reconciles monthly development account and the Development Officers’ p-card statements; prepares year-end payroll deduction acknowledgements; manages and coordinates the Libraries’ statistics and information gathering efforts, including preparing the annual report for the Association for Research Libraries; assists with gathering information needed for grant proposals and other major projects; coordinates updates to university publications and library policies and procedures, the Librarian Personnel Handbook and Bylaws, goals and objectives, mission, organizational chart and web pages on library committees; provides information to the administration, faculty, staff and external constituents regarding the Libraries; manages and coordinates travel by maintaining and updating library travel allocation balances, auditing travel reimbursements, approving expenditures of travel funds including registration payments, serving as a resource for questions regarding travel reimbursements; provides some clerical assistance for assistant directors; assists with and manages event planning as needed.
