A rise in temperatures means getting out of the office for that weekend or week-long getaway. Vacations are for rest and relaxation, but it’s important to be prepared before leaving your home for any amount of time. Here are some tips to keep you, your home and your belongings safe!
Protect your home
- Put a hold on mail and any deliveries while you’re gone or have a neighbor pick them up.
- Set some household lights on a timer.
- Have a neighbor park in your driveway to look like someone is home.
Pack lightly
- Only bring the essential items – clean out your purse or wallet to lighten your load.
- Keep a record of anything valuable you bring along, including jewelry, medicine and electronics.
- Avoid going anywhere alone – always walk around in groups, especially in someplace new.
- Check a map before you go anywhere. Become familiar with your surroundings in case of any emergency.
- Stay in well-lit areas at night.
Stay healthy
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Protect your skin by wearing SPF, a hat and sunglasses.
- Eat right and stay active on your trip.
Watch out for viruses
The FBI has recently reported that a number of malicious software viruses are being pushed through hotel internet connections. The malware comes across as a common software update for cell phones and other products. To avoid downloading viruses or malware, the FBI recommends:
- Carrying out all software updates before traveling.
- Checking the author or digital certificate of any prompted update to see if it corresponds to the software vendor.
- Downloading software updates directly from the vendor’s website.
